WHO WE ARE

The Federated Democratic Women's Club of Portage County was organized in 1932 to bring like-minded women into closer relationship with each other and the County Democratic Party, a mission it continues to this day. The organization hosts several events each year, including a spring gala and winter auction, and seeks through its actions to support the election of honest and efficient administrators who value and advocate for women.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Federated Democratic Women of Portage County is to foster relationships with all democratic women in Portage County, to encourage their involvement in the political process, and to create within them the desire to acquire the practice of citizenship by supporting the principles of Democracy.

OBJECTIVES

Our Objectives are to align with the Democratic Party principles to:

  • Provide women with opportunities to engage in the political process through active participation that supports democratic principles and to work with the Democratic Party Organizations to support and help elect Democrats.

  • Make a persistent effort to improve the system and methods of government and to work with the Democratic Party organizations to select honest and ethical leaders.

  • Encourage members to inform themselves and others on all public questions and on the qualifications of political candidates,

  • Work with Democratic Party organizations to support and help elect honest, ethical, and qualified candidates who’s values and experiences support and promote women’s issues.

HISTORY

  • The Federated Democratic Women of Ohio was organized through the dedicated efforts of Mrs. Nelle Taylor Ross. Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee of 1931.  

  • On July 28, 1931 joining Vice Chair Ross, thirteen State Central Committeewomen met in Columbus.  At this state meeting the plan to organize a state wide democratic women’s club emerged and the name, “Federate Democratic Women of Ohio,” was chosen. 

  • In 1939 the Federated Democratic Women of Portage County was established with Marygeorge Watkins as the first President.
